What can I say about Sherman Alexie other than his total awareness of Native American culture as it relates to White Culture in the United States? Having lived on and near the Rez for a number of years I think that this story, more so than Absolutely True Diaries of a Part-Time Indian, is one of the most honest, hopeful, and darkly humorous stories I've read that deals with the subject of cultural identity and cultural loss. Alexie knows how to weave in the way Natives feel while bridging the idea of being a part of the American heritage.
And, to be honest, the way that Natives handle their anger, loss, sadness, and emotions often tell tales of people adrift in a sea of unknowledge about the way the world works. These are people still reeling from a world turned on its head in a few short years followed by years of abuse.
It's a good tale, and I've spoken on it not at all. It's the hero's journey, except it's a self-aware hero's journey. One that focuses on the hero's flaws instead of his strengths. It's a tale of redemption and magic, but magic is slight and redemption difficult to earn. Overall, it's a story of honesty.
